Catherine Parsons Smith has published extensively on American music
and musicians of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth
century. Her books include William Grant Still (U of Illinois
Press, 2008, a biography), Making Music in Los Angeles (U of
California Press, 2007), William Grant Still: A Study in Contradictions
(California, 2000, essays and sources), and Mary Carr Moore,
American Composer (U of Michigan Press, 1987, with C.S. Richardson).

At UNR, she taught music history and flute. She served as principal
flute of the Reno Philharmonic until her retirement. She holds advanced
degrees from Stanford and Northwestern, and has performed with Baroque
flute, and published on eighteenth-century performance practice.
