Jose Flores received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music
Education Degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno. He has been teaching
in the Washoe County School District for 14 years. In 2002, he started
the only public school Mariachi program in Northern Nevada. He was the
Reno Philharmonic Youth Concert Orchestra Music Director from 2005-08.
In
2001 Mr. Flores received the Distinguished Performance Award from the
Washoe County Teachers Association. He was the recipient of the Excellence
in Education 2002 Teacher of the Year Award through KRNV News Channel
4, Northern Nevada Medical Center and Sierra Schools Credit Union. In
addition, he was awarded the United States Senate Certificate of Commendation,
Teacher of the Year 2002, and the United States Senatorial Recognition
Award, Teacher of the Year 2002.
Mr.
Flores was selected as the “Teacher Fellow” for 2006 by the National
Symphony Orchestra/Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He spent
two weeks in Washington DC attending workshops, seminars, and concerts
at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and throughout Washington
DC. In addition, Mr. Flores worked with conductor Elizabeth Schulze
(Music Director and Conductor of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and
prior Associate Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra) and the
Kennedy Center's Summer Music Institute Orchestra.
He has been guest conductor of various honor bands and serves as an
adjudicator in solo and ensemble festivals throughout Northern Nevada.
Mr. Flores also teaches private saxophone lessons to students in the
area.
