Songs of John Koch
Katherine DeBoer, Soprano
John Koch, Piano
Twenty-nine lyric art songs accompanied by the composer, set to poetry of Shakespeare, Yeats, Ezra Pound, E. E. Cummings, Rosetti, and others.
Songs of John Koch was recorded in concert in Vermont, accompanied by the composer. The song repertory displays a diversity of styles, from simple settings of Mother Goose, charming and nostalgic settings of poems by Burns, Yeats, de la Mare, Stevenson and others; lovely lyrical settings of medieval and Shakespeare texts; to the power and complexity of song set to poems by Ezra Pound and E. E. Cummings.
Composer John Koch was graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University as a pianist. He received a masters degree in composition from Juilliard School of Music and studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris under a Fulbright grant. He has published piano music as well as a teaching method for recorder. He toured with cellist Lynn Harrell and violinist Charles Castleman for Jeunesses Musicales in Canada, and with many singers in this country.
