Derya Sahingil
Derya Sahingil arrived at UNR in August 2010 as a Fulbright Scholar from Ankara, Turkey, where she completed her BA in English Literature with awards of success at Hacettepe University, working with Professor Serpil Oppermann. During her BA years she worked voluntarily organizing conferences, one of which was Turkey’s first international ecocriticism conference, where she had the opportunity to meet ecocritics and scholars from all around the world. It was here where she decided to direct her studies to the field of ecocriticism.
As an MA student, Derya's main research interest is representations of water in world literatures. Currently, she is working on narrative theory, toxic discourse and the similarities and differences in representations of time, place, and identity with regards to water imagery in British and American postmodern novels. Her future projects include a study of water resources as characters in postcolonial and desert literatures, with specific emphasis on time, memory, identity, and place from an ecocritical perspective. As Quantum Physics is another of her interests, she is considering using the concept of time in quantum physics in relation to her above-mentioned studies with a focus on current material theory. Derya also likes taking her camera out and spending time taking photographs and hiking. She is interested in reiki and healing, has a green belt in Karate-Do (Ki-Shotokan Style), and is a salsa performance dancer.
