Bicycling in Reno
Reno blesses road bikers with wide shoulders (at least compared to some places), an abundance of bike paths and routes, and some excellent bike shops (e.g., Bicycle Bananas and Great Basin Bicycles). It also curses us with broken glass and other tire-puncturing nasties, which is why those bike shops come in especially handy -- if you plan to ride much in Reno, you should invest in a repair kit at least, or some puncture-proof tires at best.
While you're at a shop, pick up a free Truckee Meadows Bike Map.
If you haven't been on a bike in a while and are looking for a gentle way to get back onto two wheels, try the two mile loop around Sparks Lake (actually a water-filled gravel pit with sandy beaches installed in two spots). There's also nice riding on the Truckee River Trail, a paved path that runs along the Truckee from west of Reno to the east end of Sparks.
