Suzanne Roberts

Suzanne Roberts is a PhD candidate in Literature and the Environment and is currently writing her dissertation, an ecofeminist study of Gothic literature entitled The EcoGothic: Gendered Landscapes and Pastoral Ideologies in the Gothic. Suzanne’s research interests include the eighteenth and nineteenth century British and American Gothic and ecofeminism. She is also interested in reading and writing poetry. Her poetry has been anthologized and published in over 25 small press literary journals including ZYZZYVA, Smartish Pace, Spillway, The Hurricane Review, Eclipse, and California Quarterly. Her first collection of poetry, Nothing to You, is forthcoming from Pecan Grove Press in spring 2008. A second collection of poetry, Shameless, will be released by Cherry Grove Collections in August 2008.

In addition to writing poetry, Suzanne is working on a collection of short stories and a memoir about hiking in the Sierra. She is the recipient of the 2005 Randall Reid and the 2005 MacMillan Awards at UNR. She also won the 2006 NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award.

Suzanne lives in South Lake Tahoe and is a tenured faculty member at Lake Tahoe Community College where she teaches ESL, foundational skills English, composition, literature, and creative writing. She has developed courses in Gothic Literature, Literature and the Environment, Federico García Lorca, Contemporary American Poetry, and ESL. She taught in Salamanca, Spain with the LTCC study abroad program in 2004 and has studied Spanish in Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Spain. She also edits an annual student anthology entitled Reflections and runs a successful literary reading series, hosting such authors as Chris Abani, Juan Felipe Herrera, Dorianne Laux, Luis Rodriguez, Francisco Jimenez, Sholeh Wolpé, and H.L. Hix.

Suzanne has a B.S. in Biological Sciences and an M.A. in English with an emphasis in creative writing from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She has worked as a ski instructor, outdoor trip leader, wine industry marketing director, freelance writer, and like many other graduate students, cocktail waitress. Her interests and hobbies include backpacking, backcountry skiing, yoga, gardening, and traveling. She spent the 2006-2007 school year traveling in South America for her sabbatical.
