Deidre Pike
Deidre Pike, an L&E doctoral candidate, is on the faculty of the Reynolds School of Journalism, where she teaches Critical Analysis of Mass Media, Writing Across Media, Environmental Journalism and Magazine Writing. She also serves as the managing editor of the Reynold’s School Web site and occasionally updates content on this site, as well. Pike has worked more than 15 years in print media, including stints as reporter and section editor at the Reno Gazette-Journal, editor of the Reno News & Review and a stringer to several publications including Las Vegas City Life, Sacramento News & Review and Tucson Weekly. She covered the 2003 World Trade Organization talks and protests in Cancun and has written in-depth stories about Sempra's plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Nevada's Smoke Creek Desert. She's interviewed Nevada families who live off the grid and individuals interested in peak oil issues, sustainable agriculture, alternative transportation and social activism. Her honors and awards include several Nevada Press Association awards, the Robert Laxalt Writing Award, the Nevada Attorney General's Women's Role Model for Northern Nevada award and a first place Arizona Press Club award for Science & Technology Writing. Pike has a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and a master’s degree in English from the University of Nevada, Reno. She's a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, Association for the Study of Literature & Environment, Association of Educators in Journalism & Mass Communication and the Society for Professional Journalists.
