How to Apply for Admission

Applicants for graduate programs in the Department of History at the University of Nevada, Reno must meet the following requirements.

  • M.A. program: Applicants must hold the baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university, with a major, or a 24-semester-credit minor, in history or a closely related discipline. A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 (unless the applicant has demonstrated unusual promise during his or her junior and senior years) and satisfactory scores on the GRE general test are also required for admission.

  • M.A.T. program: Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, with a major or 24-semester-credit minor in history, education (history or social-studies emphasis), or a closely related discipline. A cumulative grade point average of 2.75 is required for admission, unless the applicant demonstrated unusual promise during his or her junior and senior years. Applicants must also have at least one year of teaching experience. (The GRE is not required.)

  • Ph.D. program: Applicants must hold the Master of Arts degree, in history or a closely related discipline, from an accredited college or university. (Acceptance of an applicant's M.A. degree is at the discretion of the Graduate Studies Committee.) Admission to full Graduate Standing for Ph.D. applicants requires a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all undergraduate and graduate work and satisfactory scores on the GRE general test.
     

Application deadlines for all materials are as follows:

  • M.A. and M.A.T. Programs: October 15, for matriculation in Spring Semester;
    March 1, for matriculation in Fall Semester.
  • Ph.D. Program: March 1; matriculation in Fall only.

  • Application for Admission (which can be requested from the Department of History or the Graduate School, or downloaded from the Graduate School's website: www.unr.edu/grad/prospective/apply.asp.

    Non-U.S. citizens should complete the Application Form for International Student Admission, available at www.unr.edu/oiss/forms/request%20forms.htm
  • Test Scores: GRE General Test. Instruct the Educational Testing Service to have your scores sent to the University of Nevada, Reno. The GRE examination is not required for M.A.T. applicants.
  • Complete Transcripts of all college and university work (one official copy of each, sent directly from the college or university attended)

Department of History Application Materials

(note: additional materials are required for applications for teaching assistantships)

  • Statement of Purpose, discussing interests and plans for study, professional work, and (for M.A.T. applicants) teaching experience.
  • Writing Sample (Ph.D. applicants only)
  • Letters of Recommendation (THREE for PhD applicants, TWO for MA applicants, ONE for M.A.T applicants), which discuss the candidate's academic qualifications and aptitude for graduate study.

    Obtain the "Letter of Recommendation form" online or from the Department of History office. Give copies to your recommenders. The letters should be sent directly by the people writing them to the Graduate Advisor.
