Table 3: Slaves Belonging to (John) Augustine Washington (III),

1841-1861

Augustine Washington, the elder son of John Augustine (II) and Jane Charlotte Washington, became the proprietor of Mount Vernon in 1841, when he was 21 years old. In September 1842, he entered a formal agreement with his mother, renting the land and twenty-two slaves from her. Seven years later, Jane Charlotte Washington formally deeded him the land. When she died in 1855, he became the owner not only of the slaves he had managed since 1841, but also of additional people she had owned.

The tables here begin with slaves Augustine Washington managed in his first year at Mount Vernon, and their extended families. They continue with additional people at Augustine’s Mount Vernon: those he purchased from other owners; children of his inherited and purchased slaves. Thanks to his prodigious record-keeping and a more detailed public record than in earlier decades, we know more about these people than we do about his father’s or Bushrod Washington’s slaves: dates of birth and death, family relationships, and often other details of their lives. These tables therefore trace people across time, using Augustine Washington’s slave lists, journals, and correspondence; the U.S. census (slave schedules) for 1850 Fairfax County and 1860 Fauquier County; and finally the estate inventory, compiled after Augustine, an aide to General Robert E. Lee, was killed at Cheat Mountain on September 13, 1861.

Several of these documents reveal only part of the enslaved community. In 1860, Augustine Washington’s slaves were divided between Waveland (the Fauquier County plantation he purchased after contracting with the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association to sell his Mount Vernon home) and Mount Vernon (where he retained 1,025 acres of farmland). The 1860 Fauquier County slave schedule, which include the people at Waveland, allows for quite precise identification of individuals—perhaps because Augustine himself provided the information to the census-taker, and certainly because the information is organized by family groups. The 1860 Fairfax County slave schedule, which likely includes those left on the Mount Vernon land, are less precise—because a less-well-informed overseer likely provided the information, and because individuals appear not by family group but in order of age. Therefore, it is more difficult to identify which individuals they enumerate (approx. 20 in all).

Augustine Washington’s estate inventory includes only those men, women, and children who were at Waveland when the executors prepared the document in December 1861. The slaves who had remained on the Mount Vernon land Augustine still owned were not enumerated, because Mount Vernon was inaccessible, behind Union lines. Moreover, several of Augustine’s Waveland slaves had escaped—and returned to the Mount Vernon land—in the summer of 1861; these included at least Joe Ford and West Ford, and probably several others. The executors could thus not account for them.

Finally, a few of the people listed here might never have lived at Mount Vernon. The men he purchased in 1858-1859 may have been intended for farm labor at Waveland. Unnamed infants, valued with their mothers in the 1861 estate inventory, were likely born after the Washingtons moved to Waveland and took two-thirds of their slaves with them.

Notes:

1. Individuals enumerated in earlier tables are listed with their previous census number. Individuals born or arrived at Mount Vernon after 1833 are numbered from 109 (following the numbering of John Augustine Washington [II]’s slaves in Table 2).

2. * = rented by Augustine Washington from Jane Charlotte Washington, September 1842

3. US census info: slave schedules include age, sex, and color (B = black, Mu or M = mulatto), in that order
