A Mount Vernon Slave Census, 1815-1861

Table 5 (Background): Hannah Lee Washington estate inventory and division, 1810-1811

Like his brother Bushrod Washington, Corbin Washington received one-third of their father’s (the first John Augustine Washington) estate. He died around 1800, before their mother, Hannah Bushrod Washington, did. So did his wife, Hannah Lee Washington.

As a result, the estate of Corbin and Hannah Lee Washington would be divided among their three sons: Richard Henry Lee Washington, John Augustine Washington (II), and Bushrod Corbin Washington. This could not begin to occur until the first son reached the age of 21. In 1810, the first partition of this estate took place, involving an inventory of land and slaves and the allocation of one-third of all value to Richard Henry Lee Washington. The following year, John Augustine Washington (II) received his share. The information here is derived from that process.

This estate settlement would ultimately play a major role in Mount Vernon’s enslaved population. John Augustine Washington (II), then his wife Jane Charlotte, and finally their son John Augustine (III) each brought to Mount Vernon people enumerated here, or their descendants.

Notes and abbreviations:

ch = child

RHLW = Richard Henry Lee Washington (died 1817; estate divided between his brothers)

JAW 2 = John Augustine Washington (II)

Disposition cell blank = probably allotted to Bushrod Corbin Washington (youngest of the brothers)

For people inherited by John Augustine Washington who survived to 1832-1833, information is included (from Table 2) about where those people were at that date—Mount Vernon or Blakeley (Jefferson County plantation of JAW 2).
