Table 2: Slaves Belonging to John Augustine Washington (II),

1832-1833

John Augustine Washington (II)—Bushrod Washington’s nephew, who inherited the 1,225 acres that included the historic mansion and family tomb—owned Mount Vernon for only two years. When he died in 1832, he owned slaves on two estates: a small number at Mount Vernon, and many more at Blakeley, the Jefferson County plantation where he had lived for many years with his wife, Jane Charlotte Washington, and their three children. He left his entire estate to his widow.

John Augustine Washington had inherited his slaves from two sources. Eleven people came to him from Bushrod Washington’s Mount Vernon: seven allocated to John Augustine out of Bushrod’s estate, another four to Jane Charlotte (who was the niece of Bushrod’s wife). A much larger number had belonged to John Augustine’s parents, Corbin and Hannah Lee Washington, whose estate had been divided among their three sons (see Table 4). After the eldest son, Richard Henry Lee Washington, died in 1817, John Augustine and his brother Bushrod Corbin Washington divided Richard’s share of that estate. Most of these slaves came indirectly from the same earlier root: the estate of the first John Augustine Washington.

This page includes two tables, derived from John Augustine Washington’s estate inventory, recorded January 21, 1833, in Jefferson County, Virginia (now West Virginia) (see Sources). The first lists the men, women, and children at Mount Vernon two months after Washington’s death. The second lists those at Blakeley—not part of the Mount Vernon slave census proper, but important because several of them or their children would later be relocated to Mount Vernon.

Individuals previously enumerated among “Slaves Belonging to Bushrod Washington, 1815-1830” appear with the same census number as in Table 1. Individuals newly at Mount Vernon are enumerated beginning with the number 101. (This new numbering indicates the beginning of transplantations from the estate of Corbin and Hannah Lee Washington, as well as new children born at Mount Vernon from 1830 onward. It continues under Augustine Washington. This numbering also allows for additional entries to the list of Bushrod Washington’s slaves, should further evidence come to light.)
