JUDITH
WHITENACK, professor of Spanish, received her Ph.D. from
the University of Wisconsin. She teaches Spanish language, literature,
and culture, as well as Western Traditions. A specialist in the
Spanish Golden Age, particularly Cervantes, she has published a
book on Guzmán de Alfarache and co-edited a collection
of essays on María de Zayas and a modern edition of Leonor
de Meneses, besides publishing numerous articles on Golden Age narrative.
Appearing recently were two co-edited volumes: one an anthology
of novelas by 17th-century Spanish women and the other a
collection of critical essays on these novelas. She continues
to work on a book on the enchantress figure in Western literature.
Her article on Cervantes's
theater has been accepted for the Bulletin of the Comediantes and
another on Ana Abarca de Bolea will appear soon in a collection
on 17th century Spanish women edited by Julián Olivares.
During 2003-2004 she is on sabbatical, dividing her time between
Berkeley and Madrid.
