The Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award
In 1983, Vivienne and Bill Morris, alumni of the University of Nevada, Reno, established an endowment to fund an award in honor of Nevada Senator Alan Bible, as a means of "building morale and enthusiasm among the staff in Arts and Letters." Since then, outstanding teachers in the arts, humanities, and the natural and social sciences have been honored. Many of these recipients have gone on to receive recognition as outstanding teacher of the year for the entire university. The College of Liberal Arts takes special care in selecting honorees for this award. A committee made up of the past two award winners, a student representative, and three other faculty members reviews the nominations, observes the teachers in the classroom, and reconvenes to select the winners.
In 1995, Paul Bible, Senator Alan Bible's son, began a project to increase the endowment fund. Since then, contributions from individuals, foundations, and businesses have significantly impacted the fund, enabling the College of Liberal Arts to increase the award monies. The college is grateful for Mr. Bible's efforts.
Winner of the 2004 Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award was Eric Rasmussen of the English Department. Runner up was Sean Casey, of the Chemistry Department.
