Undergraduate Information

Alert!

Please be aware of the following new requirements for the English major and minor, with an emphasis in literature: As of fall 2008, students declaring the major or minor in English, with an emphasis in literature, are required to take the Transatlantic Survey courses, English 311 (offered in Fall 08) and English 312 (offered in Spring 09).

English literature majors and minors who have just finished 298 and will be taking 303 this fall should plan on enrolling in 311 in the fall semester of 2008. Please note that these new requirements are effective with the fall 2008 catalogue, so they affect majors and minors declaring English with a literature emphasis after this semester.

Students who enrolled under an earlier catalogue (for example, 2007-08) are welcome to enroll in the new Transatlantic Survey courses. If you'd like to see the description of English 311, please see our current course offerings Both English 311 and 312 may be substituted for a 400-level elective in the literature major or minor. Please check our advising page for other updates in the major

Why talk with an advisor

Even though you are responsible for your progress, an advisor can help you plan your curriculum, keep track of your progress, and graduate in a timely manner. Advisors can answer questions about DARS, course substitutions, and classes of special interest to you. Make an appointment before you register for each semester's classes. See the list of academic advisors in English.

1. The TESOL minor will not certify you as an ESL instructor; a Masters in ESL is required for that. The minor can prepare you to teach abroad.

2. The Literature and Environment minor is not available to literature majors, but is available to writing or linguistics majors. It is designed especially to supplement studies in the physical sciences, agriculture or engineering.

3.The English Department does not set the requirements listed in College of Education pages. Please check with an advisor in that college for current information specific to your Education classes.
