Graduate Emphasis: Literature

The English Department offers a wide range of courses on English, American and global literature. Our two dozen faculty members publish frequently in leading journals and have authored recent books on topics ranging from Arthurian legend to postmodern American lyric. We have particular strengths in the areas of medieval, Renaissance, eighteenth century, Victorian, twentieth century and American literature. Faculty members also teach in a variety of programs across campus, including Environmental Studies, Museum Studies and Women's Studies.

Our graduate program has an exceptional placement rate, and our PhD. graduates have been appointed to tenure-track positions at schools across the country and abroad. MA students have gone on to advanced graduate study in areas including English, Law, Education and Business, and to careers in politics, business, editing, and many other fields. Our current students are active in the profession, from organizing panels at national conferences to serving as dramaturge at the Oregon Shakespeare festival. New graduate students may have opportunities for teaching a range of courses (including Core Humanities and individually designed literature courses) and for sponsored travel and research.
