Maintaining Graduate Standing
Applicants who are admitted to graduate programs in the Department of English must respond to the letter of admission in writing, stating whether or not they intend to enroll. An offer of admission is for a specific semester. Former applicants who did not enroll in the semester for which they were admitted must reapply if they wish to be admitted in a subsequent year. The offer of admission may be deferred for up to one academic year if a request to defer is made by the student in writing, in advance.
Students in graduate programs at the University of Nevada, Reno, are required by the Graduate School to enroll in a minimum of three graduate-level credits in each fall and spring semester to remain in graduate standing. Those failing to do so will be dropped from graduate standing to graduate special status. It is at the discretion of the Department of English, subject to the regulations of the Graduate School, whether students who fail to maintain graduate standing are to be readmitted to the program at any subsequent date. Students who are unable to take the minimum number of credits in a given semester should thus request a leave of absence in writing, using the form available from the Graduate School, if they wish to retain their standing in a graduate program. (See Leave of Absence Policy.)
Students who fail to make satisfactory progress toward the degree may be dropped from the graduate program.
Academic dishonesty is grounds for dismissal from any graduate program in the Department of English. Should any graduate student in the department be determined to be guilty of academic dishonesty, following the procedures outlined in the university's Academic Dishonesty Policy, the department's Graduate Committee will request that the Graduate School dismiss the student from his or her graduate program, immediately.
