M.A.T.E. Program
General Information and Requirements
The Master of Arts in the Teaching of English program is designed primarily for elementary and secondary teachers of literature, language, and writing. It offers two emphases, in literature and in writing. The M.A.T.E. degree does not, however, lead to a Nevada public schools teaching certificate for grades K-12; such certification is available only through the College of Education. Most students in the M.A.T.E. program already have received this certification.
Please read the section on general requirements for master's degrees. General requirements for the M.A.T.E. degree program are the same as those for the M.A., program, with two exceptions:
1. The advisory committee for an M.A.T.E. student should include a chair chosen from graduate faculty in the Department of English, a second member chosen from the College of Education, and a third member from another university department.
2. Competence in a foreign language is not required for completion of the M.A.T.E program.
