How to Apply for Admission


Applicants for graduate programs in the Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno, must meet the following requirements.

M.A. programs: Applicants must have an undergraduate major or minor in English or its equivalent from an accredited college or university, and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.

Ph.D. programs: Applicants must have an M.A. in English or its equivalent from an accredited college or university, and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.

Applications for the Ph.D. program are considered once a year, for admission the following fall; applications for the M.A. programs are considered twice a year, for fall or spring admission. All forms required as part of the application process are available online.

Application materials must be submitted as follows. Your application must be complete by the specified deadline or it will not be considered.

Graduate School Application Materials
Deadline for receipt: Ph.D. applications--February 1st for fall admission
M.A. applications--February 1st for fall admission, October 1st for spring

All applicants must submit:

*Application for Admission (international applicants must complete the Application Form for International Student Admission)
*GRE General Exam scores (an official copy sent directly to the Graduate School) "Normally, test scores over five years old are not acceptable" (UNR Graduate Catalog).
*Complete Transcripts of all college and university work (two official copies sent directly from every institution attended)
*Application fee
New applicants: $60
Returning students or alumni: $40
International students: $95

International applicants must also submit:

*TOEFL exam scores (an official copy sent directly to the Graduate School). The exam is required of international applicants who do not have a baccalaureate or master’s degree from an accredited university in an English-speaking country; the minimum score for admission is 600.

Departmental Application Materials

*Statement of Purpose, describing your academic interests and goals and explaining which degree program and area of emphasis you wish to pursue at Nevada, and why (one to three pages)

*Writing Sample, representing your best work (e.g., a class paper of superior quality)

*Letters of Recommendation, from three professors with whom you have studied or others who can evaluate your preparation for graduate work. The completed Letter of Recommendation form must be mailed in with each of your letters.

Letters should be sent by the people writing them directly to the Director of Graduate Studies at the above address.
