Research participation requirement Students are required to participate in research-type activities. Each takes approximately 30-60 minutes. Some example options include: 1) being a research participant (e.g., filling out a survey), 2) on-line literature searches or library work, 3) reading and summarizing a scholarly research paper. The purpose of research participation is to expose students to research and research methods. For example, if you choose to participate in a research study, you will receive a detailed “debriefing form” which will tell you what the researchers were studying and how the research was designed. The researchers will provide your professor with a list of participants at the end of the semester, so there is no need for you to tell your professor when you have completed the assignment. You must choose two of the options described below. You cannot do the same study twice (with the exception of Option 1- you can read and summarize two different articles). More options will become available periodically throughout the semester. Please follow the instructions for each component to ensure that you will receive full credit for the research requirement. If you have questions about this component, please contact Dr. Miller at 784-6021 or email UNRresearch@yahoo.com The deadline for completing this component is April 30, 2008. Option 1: Read and Summarize a Criminal Justice
Journal Article
Project Description: Read a criminal justice article of your choice that is 7 to 10 pages long and write a one page, double-spaced summary of the article. The article can be on any topic related to criminal justice, but it must come from a peer-reviewed journal (e.g., American Journal of Criminal Justice, Journal of Criminal Justice, Law and Human Behavior). If you are unsure about whether the specific journal qualifies for credit, e-mail the article citation to UNRresearch1@yahoo.com. How to participate: Find a journal article that is related to criminal justice. Read the article you have selected and type your summary in a Microsoft Word document. You must also include the citation of the article at the beginning of your summary. Then, e-mail your summary as an attachment to UNRresearch1@yahoo.com. If you have any questions, e-mail UNRresearch1@yahoo.com. You do NOT need to tell your professor when you’ve completed the study. We will provide a list of participants to your professor at the end of the semester. Option 2: Study Title: Perceptions of Current Legal Policies Study

Equivalent alternatives for extra credit will be offered in every class where extra credit is given for participation in this study. If you are in a class which offers extra credit for this study and wish to do an alternate extra credit opportunity, please ask the professor for future directions. Option 4: Study Title: How People Respond to Offenses Study description:
The study will investigate how people respond to someone who offends them.
You will read a short scenario in which you imagine you are participating in
a study that tests how well you can complete a task. The scenario continues
to describe that as you struggle to complete the task, the research assistant
insults your intelligence. Then you will be asked to rate your perceptions of
the research assistant and the offense. You will receive credit (as
determined by your professor) for participating in this 20-30 minute
study. Please note: You cannot participate in this study if you
participated in the “in person” (i.e., not online) study titled
“How Distraction Affects Performance” that took place at UNR and
TMCC during the previous academic year. How to participate:
Participate online by visiting the website for the study: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=mfi8w5FBPNX1Mg0lJUbZPg_3d_3d If you wish to participate in person, email UNRresearch6@yahoo.com or call (775) 784-6021 with your availability to participate in person. If you have any questions, contact UNRresearch6@yahoo.com or Monica Miller, J.D., Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Social Psychology; Department of Criminal Justice Mailstop 214; Leifson Physics Building; (775) 784-6021. You do NOT need to tell your professor when you’ve completed the study. We will provide a list of participants to your professor at the end of the semester. Equivalent alternatives for extra credit will be offered in every class where extra credit is given for participation in this study. If you are in a class which offers extra credit for this study and wish to do an alternate extra credit opportunity, please ask the professor for future directions. Option 3: Study Title: Factors that influence communications between citizens and police Please NOTE: You cannot do this study if you did it last semester. This study will investigate the factors that may or may not influence communication between citizens and police. For example, it will investigate things that may encourage or discourage you from reporting crimes to police. You will be asked to read a short paragraph in which you imagine that someone steals your purse or wallet. You will then answer survey questions about what you would do and how you feel. The survey will also ask about your opinions toward police and the legal system. You will receive extra credit (as determined by your professor) for participating in this 45 minute study. You may do the study online or in person. If you choose the online option, you will go to a website and complete the survey on the computer. If you choose to do the study in person, you can schedule a time to participate in the study on campus. You may withdraw from the study before completion and still obtain class credit. Equivalent alternatives for extra credit will be offered in every class where extra credit is given for participation in this study. If you are in a class which offers extra credit for this study and wish to do an alternate extra credit opportunity, please ask the professor for future directions. How to participate: If you would like to participate online, click on the following link and follow the directions: If you would like to participate in person or have any questions about the study, please email the researcher at: UNRresearch2@yahoo.com You do NOT need to tell your professor when you’ve completed the study. We will provide a list of participants to your professor at the end of the semester. |
