Learning Outcomes for CH 201

A student successfully completing CH 201 at UNR will be able to:

1)  Frame a thesis about a single primary text and argue for it in writing, using relevant evidence.

2)  Recognize and identify the practices, ideas, and habits of mind that characterize a culture, and be able to differentiate one culture from another.

3)  Produce a balanced comparison between two texts or cultural practices.

4)  Engage knowledgeably in oral discussion of texts and cultures, making well-supported claims about ideas, issues, and problems connected with ancient and medieval cultures.

5)  Read ancient and medieval texts in modern English translation, analyzing for significant content and cultural context.

6)  Recognize and analyze historical precedents for contemporary ideas.

7)  Develop a basic familiarity with the cultural values, distinctive practices, and achievements in the arts and sciences, of the cultures of the ancient Near East, of ancient and classical Greece, of Rome, and of medieval Europe
