Valerie
Weinstein joined the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures as
an Assistant Professor of German in Fall 2001. She earned her B.A.
in German Studies from Harvard University (1993) and her M.A. and Ph.D.
in German Studies, with a minor in Women's Studies, from Cornell University
(1997, 2000). Her dissertation, "Mistaken Identity in Wilhelmine,
Weimar, and Nazi Film," discusses how mistaken identity films, (including
comedies, horror films, melodramas, and science fiction) shaped notions
of race and gender in Germany between WWI and WWII. She is currently
revising her dissertation into a book manuscript. In addition to twentieth-century
literature and film, she is also interested in questions of race, gender,
and sexuality, and she has published on German colonialism in the Pacific.
She was awarded the Sanford Distinguished Professorship in the Humanities for 2006-2008, and in connection with that endowed professorship she studied the social and cultural issues involved in the aging of the WWII generation in Germany. In addition to teaching Core Humanities, she teaches courses on German culture, film,
and language. Before coming to UNR, she taught at Williams College.
