Thomas
Nickles, Professor and former chair of the philosophy department, earned B.A.
and B.S. degrees in philosophy and mathematics at the University of Illinois,
Champaign-Urbana, in his home state. He continued his studies of
philosophy and the sciences (Ph.D. 1969) in Princeton University's Program
in History and Philosophy of Science, directed by Thomas Kuhn. Before
coming to Nevada, he taught at the University of Illinois and the University
of Chicago. His interests
are wide, but his publications fall mostly in the area of philosophy of
science, to which he generally takes a historical approach. He organized
the First Leonard Conference, on the topic of scientific discovery, at
UNR in 1978, from which two volumes of papers emerged. He is currently
editing a volume on Thomas Kuhn and serving as the Joseph N. Crowley
Distinguished Professor of the Humanities 2005-2007.
