Dennis
Cronan, an Associate Professor in the English department, was appointed
the first University Distinguished Professor in the Humanities for 1999-2001.
During the period of this award he dedicated himself full time to the teaching
of Core Humanities and developed capstone courses in literacy and oral
transmission of stories. He is a medievalist with a Ph.D. in Germanic
philology from the University of Minnesota, where he specialized in Old
English language and literature. In addition to courses in Core Humanities
and Old English, he teaches Beowulf, Chaucer, Middle English language
and literature, history of the English language, introduction to linguistics,
and occasionally Old Norse.
