Dates THE DOCTORAL APPLICATION PROCEDURES Please carefully follow the application instructions below, and download the Doctoral Program Application Checklist. All application materials received become the property of the Anthropology Department and will not be returned. SECTION I The Graduate School (domestic applicants), or the Office of International Students and Scholars (foreign applicants) must receive the following documents no later than January 15th in order to ensure timely processing: a) Application for Graduate Admission. b) Two official transcripts from each college and university attended for all undergraduate and graduate work completed to date. c) Official GRE Scores from ETS. d) TOEFL Scores - applicable to foreign applicants only, unless otherwise exempt (foreign applicants must also submit their GRE scores to International Outreach and Application Services). SECTION II The following materials must be
sent in one complete packet to:
Each document submitted must be typed. Please do not handwrite any document. a) At least four (4) letters of recommendation: at least two letters must be from former professors qualified to judge the applicant's potential to complete a doctoral program; two of the letters from former professors must also include an assessment of verbal and writing skills. Other letters may be from professional colleagues in anthropology. If you have attended more than one college, two of the four letters should come from your current or most recent university. b) Waiver Form: this form must be provided to each recommender. The recommender must include the UNR Anthropology Department waiver form with his/her letter. Download the Waiver Form here. IMPORTANT c) Statement of Purpose: 2-4 pages, double spaced; please be very concise and explicit about your anthropological interests and goals. d) Preliminary Proposal for Dissertation Research: no more than 5 pages, double spaced. It must identify your project and indicate what you intend to achieve. e) Master's thesis, paper published in a professional journal, or an equivalent work such as a grant proposal or technical report. f) Statement of Qualifications for Graduate Assistantship: Optional. g) The application will go forward to the Graduate Admissions Committee for consideration only if a faculty member agrees to serve as the applicant's graduate advisor.
