MASTER'S PROGRAM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

a) Applicants are admitted to graduate standing in the Fall term only. Applicants, excluding foreign applicants, may enter as graduate specials in the Spring term, or use the Spring term to make up coursework deficiencies, pending approval of their application to the program.

b) Applicants must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (in a 4.0 system) for all undergraduate and graduate coursework.

c) The general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) must have been taken prior to application to the program. Scores cannot be older than five years from the date of application. To be competitive, it is recommended that applicants have scores in the range of 600 on the Verbal, 500 on the Quantitative, and 4.0 on the Analytical components of the exam (or 500 on the Analytical test if taken prior to 2003). You need to submit your scores to the Graduate School with your application.

d) In addition to the GRE, foreign applicants for whom English is a second language must have taken the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 500. TOEFL scores must be less than two years old and sent directly from ETS (Educational Testing Service) to the Graduate School. If admitted, foreign applicants with TOEFL scores less than 600 must report to the university's Intensive English Language Center for evaluation and appropriate placement in English language courses. Foreign applicants are exempt if they score 600+ on the TOEFL, or have a degree from a college or university located within the continental United States or are from the following countries designated by the State Department: Australia, Bahamas, British Guiana, Great Britain, St. Vincent, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago. (This list may not be all inclusive at time of printing. Check with Admissions and Records.)

e) Applicants should have passed a basic course in statistics prior to admission to the program. In lieu of such a course, the student must successfully complete a basic statistics course during the first year of graduate work.

f) Under exceptional circumstances, applicants without an adequate anthropology background or who do not meet minimum GPA/GRE requirements may be admitted through a prescribed program. The prescribed program requires completion of assigned coursework during the first year in the program with a "B" or better in each course.
