Sundance Current ResearchThe Sundance Archaeological Research Fund has sponsored archaeological field research in the Great Basin since 1996, under the direction of Dr. Don Fowler, Fred Nials, Dr. Ted Goebel, Joe Cramer, Dr. Don Hardesty, and Dr. Gary Haynes. Major field projects have included a geomorphic investigation of the Dietz Clovis site in southcentral Oregon, as well as survey and excavation of stemmed point sites in the Dietz site vicinity. Sundance field projects have also involved survey of a number of areas in the northern Great Basin, including Harney Lake basin, Malheur basin, Hawksy-Walksy basin, Warner Valley, and Beatty's Butte, Oregon. Current Sundance-sponsored field research focuses on Paleoindian and Paleoarchaic archaeology in Nevada and eastern California. Since 2003, Sundance research teams in eastern Nevada have conducted excavations at Bonneville Estates Rockshelter and surface investigations of Clovis and stemmed-point sites in Jakes Valley. In summer of 2006 we undertook an excavation of the Paiute Creek prehistoric site under the direction of Geoff Smith. Further, we began a long-term field research program in the Black Rock-High Rock region of northwest Nevada, focusing on a detailed study of the Parman Lake stemmed-point sites and an intensive survey of the Rock Creek drainage. We are also doing research in the Dugway, UT area looking for basalt sourcing areas that may have been by prehistoric populations.
