Nicholas Weiland
Bachelor of Arts, 2012
Major: History
Dean’s Award for Service

“Nick is a thoughtful, industrious student who believes that people should be encouraged to critically analyze the world and is actively engaged in such analysis himself,” wrote Dr. Neal Ferguson in his nomination letter for Nicholas Weiland, adding that “Nick has shown excellent enterprise, organizational and leadership skills.”

Nick is the founding editor of The Montag, the College of Liberal Arts Journal of Undergraduate Research, which was launched very successfully with its first issue in April 2012. Understandably proud of this achievement, Nick is also confident that, “through extensive faculty support and the enthusiastic members of the editorial board, The Montag will continue to develop after I graduate and will serve the University as a symbol of student commitment to academic excellence.”

As a faculty advisor to The Montag, Professor Ferguson noted that, as the leader of an editorial team, Nick was able to exercise an ideal “combination of leading and empowering,” and that “his ability to inspire enthusiasm for the project and the highly competent manner in which he has approached all the tasks related to producing The Montag are impressive.”

Political Science Professor Bozena Welborne, who also nominated Nick for the Dean’s Award for Service, commented on the wide range of his service activities: “Nick’s extracurricular experience as a teacher’s aide to disabled students in Reno shows his commitment to the local community, while his humanitarian missions in Central America highlight his work in the international arena.”

Nick’s leadership and commitment to public service have resulted in an invitation to join the 2012 Teach for America Corps. While serving in this position he will also pursue a master’s degree in education policy at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Nick continues to demonstrate his ongoing commitment to providing learning opportunities to students from many different walks of life.
