Reno Wind Symphony
A Community Experience
The Reno Wind Symphony is an adult community band of 80 musicians who were organized in the spring of 2006. The membership includes 29 area music educators in Northern Nevada and California. Over 60% of the members in the group are alumni of the University of Nevada Band Department.
The Reno Wind Symphony (RWS) explores all areas of wind band literature. The purpose of this organization is to improve technical playing, overall musicianship, work ethic and motivation through challenging literature. The membership of the RWS is open to any member of the community, twenty-one years and older, who wishes to continue this form of performance activity. The RWS performs two concerts each semester. Concerts are held in Nightingale Concert Hall on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
The individual members of the RWS possess different backgrounds and levels of musicality, deeming it necessary to teach in a manner that matches previous musical experiences. Each rehearsal will begin with warm-up exercises utilizing various scale passages with the emphasis on correct breathing habits and tone production. Rehearsal techniques will focus on basic types of musical articulation including legato, marcato and staccato styles. Additional subject matter will include, but not limited to, rehearsal procedures, listening, interpretation of music through wind band literature presented, and performance. Because this course is designed primarily for the professional music educator, a basic knowledge of wind band literature performed in earlier public school and college is mandatory. Members of the RWS will study complete listings of wind band music by specific composers and their compositions on various graded scales.

A Holiday Tradition
During the month of December, the Reno Wind Symphony packs Nightingale Concert Hall with patrons eager to hear classic holiday songs. For several years now, Ross Mitchell, from KOH Radio, narrates the evening, and it's become a tradition for his recitation of the mid-nineteenth century poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. It's an evening of fun for everyone, young and old, and warm of heart.
