Diamonds
for a Glass of Water
Diamonds for a Glass of Water is a two-hour live
cablecast originally aired on Monday, May 13, 1996.
The program was co-produced by the Center for Holocaust,
Genocide & Peace Studies and SNCAT-Reno, in cooperation
with local religious, ethnic and educational institutions.
The
two hour live documentary was hosted by Joseph Andrejchak
Galata and included survivors of World War II atrocities.
Diamonds also featured scholars
Dr. Viktoria Hertling,
Director of the Center, Dr.
Shelley Lescott-Leszczynski, Dr.
Leonard Weinberg, and Mr. Lee Chazen,
board members of the Center. The featured guests included
Mr. Jan Zieba, Mrs. Ann Milhollan, and
Dr. Janusz Lescott-Leszczynski.
Dr.
Janusz Leszczynski spoke about his disturbing childhood
recollections as a Polish boy living near the concentration
camp of Treblinka. Mrs. Milhollan, originally from Frankfurt,
was able to leave Germany and come to the United States
in 1939. Seven of her family members perished in Nazi
concentration camps. Mr. Zieba, a Polish Roman-Catholic,
was among the first political prisoners taken to Auschwitz
in June, 1940. Most likely, one of the reasons he survived
was his skill to build kayaks for the children of the
infamous Commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoess. Hoess
was convicted of war crimes by a Polish court and sentenced
to death in 1946. Since his days at Auschwitz, Mr. Zieba,
now living in Reno, has built perhaps 10 more kayaks--
this time for his own children.
Fourty-five
minutes of the program was dedicated to call-in questions
from local residents and memorial music was played by
Temple Sinai Reform Choir. Since its original broadcast,
Diamonds has been shown on SNCAT at least twenty times.
On
Saturday, October 19,1996 the National Alliance for
Community Media in Santa Monica, California, presented
the special W.A.V.E. Award for Diamonds. Producers Joe
Galata and Dr. Viktoria Hertling accepted the award.
