UNR Will Hold Genocide Conference in the Fall

Call for proposed academic papers is issued for event

As the world approaches the next millennium, nationalism, ethnic conflict and genocide continue to make headlines.

The second International Conference on Genocide, scheduled for Oct. 21-24, 2000 at the University of Nevada, Reno, promises to bring an in-depth look at these end-of-century trends.

The conference, organized by the university's Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Peace Studies, will have special focus on a multitude of thought, including the social bases of genocide; the political and economic forces behind genocide; colonialism, imperialism and genocide; religion and genocide; cultural genocide; early intervention and post-genocide strategies; case studies of genocide; and other related topics in genocide studies. The conference is currently making a call for academic papers that may fall into the categories listed.

Those interested can submit a copy of an abstract 150 to 300 words and a brief curriculum vitae to Viktoria Hertling, Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Peace Studies, MS 402, University of Nevada, Reno 89557; or to Berch Beberoglu, department of Sociology, MS 300, University of Nevada, Reno 89557.

The documents also can be e-mailed to <hertling@scs.unr.edu> or <berchb@scs.unr.edu>

The call for papers runs through May 15, 2000.

Upon acceptance of proposals, completed papers are due Sept. 1. The conference's organizers anticipate the publication of selected papers in an edited book.
