Festival for Peace '96

The Center for Holocaust, Genocide & Peace Studies at the University of Nevada is producing Reno's first Festival for Peace in Wingfield Park on Sunday, May 19 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

This free event will feature community peace advocates of all ages sharing their dances, skits, poems an artwork on what peace means to them.

"Through the Festival for Peace '96 we are working 'peace by peace' with teachers, concerned citizens and local groups and officials toward conflict resolution, prejudice reduction and peaceful social relationships," says Dr. Viktoria Hertling, Director of the Center.

Here is a poem recently written by a WCSD student for the Festival for Peace:

Peace is contagious
The results are outrageous
You can help anytime
Anything will be fine
Helping a neighbor
Would be a great favor
Giving to the poor
And so much more!
This is what I think peace
is all about!

by Dillon Lowe, a second grader in Betsy Wright's class at Alice Smith Elementary School

We are looking forward to an entertaining afternoon in the park with family and friends to underscore our need and desire for tolerance as a building block for peace in all communities of the world. Let's celebrate together!

Refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase.
