International
Conference
Children
in the Holocaust--Children in Exile--Children under
Fascism was the title of an international conference
held from October 3-6, 1996 at UNR with 35 scholars
from the United States and Europe. The conference was
the first of its kind and addressed the specificity
of children within a triangle of victimization, namely
as Jewish children, as children of political opponents
pushed into exile during the Nazi period and as German
children forced into brutal youth organizations. Several
of the participating scholars spoke from the perspective
of former victims and as researchers. Author Sonia Levitin
addressed a large audience of community people and UNR
students in the ASUN auditorium. The conference was
organized by the Centers Director, Professor
Viktoria Hertling.
The
victimization and the study of children during the Holocaust
is a relatively new area of research and is going to
be the focus of a follow-up conference in May 1997,
at the University of Marburg in Germany. Dr. Hertling
will present her some of her newest research there.
She will also lecture at several universities in Europe.
At the University of Essen, Germany, Dr. Hertlings
Emmy-nominated video documentary Memories of the
Holocaust will be featured.
