From The Safety of This Room

From the safety of this room, I learned about the Shoah.
My heart sank as I heard from people who lived through.
Thousands of people died for their faith.
And a piece of me died too.

From the safety of this room, I learned about Cambodia
A genocide that most people never knew.
Thousands of people died for no cause.
And a piece of me died too.

From the safety of this room, I learned about Rwanda.
The population was literally cut in two.
Thousands of people died for being themselves.
And a piece of me died too.

From the safety of this room, I learned about peace.
There are poeple working for the benefit of me and you.
Beads of hope and tolerance began to grow in students here.
And a piece of me grew too.
