UNR Chemical Engineering Students Win Second Place in Autonomous Vehicle Competition

On Sunday, October 31, 1999, five UNR Chemical Engineering seniors won Second Place in the inaugural "Autonomous Vehicle Competition," at the Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, in Dallas.

The car that Matt Johannson, Conrad Peterson, Gary Greenleaf, Adam Gianola, and Vladan Jankovic designed and built is powered by a fuel cell and came within one foot of the specified 75 feet, which was bested by only a few inches by the team from the University of Michigan.

The UNR team had an excellent poster describing their car, named "White Lightning," displayed in the registration area of the conference.  Dr. Coronella, the faculty advisor for the team, was ecstatic over the win and led the cheers.  The team vowed to win the competition next year.

The UNR Team took a victory lap during the Pizza Seminar on Friday, November 5, after which the car was installed in the glass AIChE trophy case near the elevators.  Their poster has been installed on the ChE Wall of Fame.
