Target on Diversity

This fall marks Career Development's 3rd ever Diversity Networking Reception.  Students and employers gather together to mingle with each other and talk about the many career and internship opportunities available.  This year, Target has stepped up and taken the lead as our Diversity Champion.  As primary sponsor of the event, Target continues to show a commitment to diversity especially in recruiting University of Nevada Reno students.  The Diversity Networking Reception will be held on Tuesday, November 6th from 4pm to 6pm.

In Their Own Words

Target has a strong commitment to diversity, working hard to make diversity an integral part of our culture. From the way we relate to each other as team members, to the way we serve our guests and communities, to the way we deliver for our shareholders by pursuing the right business opportunities, Target embraces the uniqueness that each team member brings to the business.

In fact, we believe so strongly in the importance of diversity that we have made it one of our core values in support of our Best Company Ever vision. The phrase we use to talk about our commitment to diversity is “The Strength of Many. The Power of One.”

We’re working to strengthen our commitment to diversity because it’s good for our business. By attracting the best talent and creating an environment where individual differences are respected and high-performing team members can excel, we build the competitive advantage that drives our success.

Every team member has a role in our corporation. Our future growth and success depends on us being able to meet the needs of our guests and our ability to know our guests depends on team members who understand the diverse communities we serve.

Walk this way:  Career Development now offers walk-in hours

WALK-IN HOURS ARE HERE!

What are the walk-in sessions for?

Walk-in appointments are generally very brief sessions with a Career Development staff member and typically last 15-20 minutes in length, though can be briefer. The purpose of the walk-in session is to provide a quick and accessible format for students who want to explore questions related to academic and career issues without waiting for a regular appointment. The walk-in session will also direct students to the services provided by Career Development. Referrals to other campus services will be made, if appropriate.

In many situations, using the walk-in session will be a starting point. It is possible that after a walk-in session, the student will have the answers needed to make her/his decisions. It is also possible that a student will schedule a regular appointment with a staff member in Career Development as a result of what was discussed during the walk-in session.

Some common uses for the Career Development walk-in sessions include:
  • "I need an effective résumé!" – We’ll provide very fast and very direct reviews and suggestions.
  • "I have an interview. What do I do?"– Checking in before the big interview is good, and we’ll help.
  • "I am lost!" – We can serve as a waypoint and help you get your bearings, here on campus, with your career, and with life.
  • "I have an academic major 'crisis'" – We can help you plan solutions that help you get through college and graduate.
  • "I didn’t get accepted into grad school!" – We can assist with this dilemma and help you become a more competitive applicant.
  • "How do I get started?" – We’ll help you access and utilize services and programs, designed to best meet your individual needs.
How it works:

To utilize the walk-in opportunity, simply come into Career Development, located in Thompson Building, Room 200. Appointments will not be made for walk-in sessions and students will be seen on a first-come, first served basis. Of course, students are welcome to schedule a regular appointment by calling: 784-4678

Walk-in sessions are staffed by the professionals in Career Development.

Paperwork:

We ask all walk-in clients to complete either the initial intake form or the repeat form. These forms are standard forms used within Career Development.

What the walk-in sessions are not:

Walk-in sessions are not designed for regular career counseling. Therefore, sessions will be deliberately brief, about 20 minutes at most. If a longer session is needed, the walk-in staff member will assist the student with scheduling the longer session, which may be on a later day.

Sessions are not designed to replace advisor meetings – and we have no authority to sign as an academic advisor. We will refer students with such requests to their advisors.

The sessions are also not for mental health crisis counseling. Students in need of mental health services will be referred to Counseling Services (which is right next door to us): 784-4648

Come into the office anytime on Monday through Friday from 1:00pm until 3:00pm and talk with a professional.  Appointments will be about 20 to 30 minutes long, and you can expect to get some basic information to get you going.  We offer a variety of services to students, so if you have questions or want to learn more about any of the things below, please come see us.

You have career questions. We have career answers.
