A cover letter gives you a first and only chance to interest your potential employer in looking at your resume or curriculum vitae. This is where you state your intention to apply for a specific position and make an argument that you are the best candidate for the job. Employers, sometimes reading through hundreds of cover letters targeting the same job, will rely on you to follow the standard structure (see the template) and to keep it to 1-2 pages, so that they can easily find what they are looking for and move your application forward for further consideration.
