Part-time, Temporary, Hourly Positions
Career Development offers a referral service to students for part-time jobs on and off campus, managed by Career Development. If you are a student or employer interested in full-time, career opportunities, please visit Career Navigator.
Have a part-time job is a learning experience that complements a student's academic career with a financially productive activity. Students can defray some of the costs of their college education. Additionally they gain important job skills in a field related to their major or interest, establish a work history, and develop professional networks.
Employers can familiarize themselves with the policies and procedures by reading the Guide to Student Employee HR. The job board accepts only part-time, temporary, and hourly positions. We do not post career, full-time, or unskilled positions. Positions should be those that require some degree of college-level skills or knowledge. It is okay to post full-time opportunities for summer and seasonal time periods or when school is not in session. Business license is required for posting.
Eligibility
Students who maintain enrollment at the University at least half-time and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA as an undergraduate/ 3.0 GPA as a graduate student may participate in the program. The student must be a US citizen or lawfully authorized to work in the United States.
International students must meet the same GPA requirements. They are required by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) regulations to be enrolled full-time (12 undergraduate or 9 graduate credits), with an I-20 issued from this university. New regulations stipulate that F1 students must secure a job before they can apply for a social security card, and the employer must complete the On-Campus Employment Letter. In addition, international students on J-1 visas with a DS-2019 issued by an agency must provide a letter of work permission from a responsible officer of that agency prior to employment. Contact the Office for International Students and Scholars at 784-6674, for additional information.
For summer employment, be enrolled in 6 credits for summer term, or have completed 6 credits during spring term and returning in the all semester, or be registered for a minimum of 6 credits fall term.
Types of Employment
On-Campus PositionsThese are temporary, hourly, part-time jobs available through colleges and departments. They have flexible work hours designed to accommodate the class schedule. The duties, responsibilities, and wage are determined by the employer. Students may work an average of twenty hours a week when classes are in session and as many as 40 hours during vacation periods.
Federal College Work-Study ProgramThis is a need-based financial aid program under which the student is paid every two weeks for hours worked. These funds are used to pay for educationally-related expenses. The student files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and if eligible, is allocated a specific amount of money that may be earned each semester. Most student work 15-20 hours a week when classes are in session either on or off campus. Prior to employment off-campus, a contract must be signed with the business or organization and matching funds deposited with the University. Interested profit and non-profit organizations should contact the office for more information about the program and the requirements for their participation. For more information, contact Financial Aid at 784-4666.
Literacy ProgramsThrough provisions in the Federal Work-Study Program, there are opportunities to teach reading and mathematics to area elementary school children and/or to work with family literacy programs. An interested student must qualify for federal work-study. Available positions may be searched for on the Job Board or the student may contact an elementary school where he or she may want to work. A contract with the elementary school or non-profit agency providing literacy services is required prior to the student's employment. Contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships for more information at (775) 784-4666.
Community ServiceStudents eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program may participate in positions designed to improve the quality of life in our community. In addition to activities that benefit residents of the immediate Reno area, community service opportunities include development efforts in rural areas, environmental management, youth services and literacy programs. Off-campus positions require a contract with the organization prior to the start of employment and matching funds from the employer are required. Interested employers should contact the office for information about their participation.
Off-Campus EmploymentPart-time, hourly positions are posted on the Job Board by community employers in licensed private, public and nonprofit businesses. Students are encouraged to investigate jobs that are related to their academic and career goals or specific areas of interest or prior experience.
InternshipsSome internships may qualify for academic credit. Please contact your program for such opportunities. For additional internship opportunities, go to Career Navigator.
