Summer Arts Event: Community Project

Where: Front Door Gallery, Church Fine Arts Building
What: The School of the Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno presents world-class offerings from guest artists and performers, as well as faculty and students within the school’s departments of art, dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Most arts365 performances and exhibits take place in the Church Fine Arts Building on the University campus — many are free and all are open to the community.

The Summer Arts Festival and Summer Chamber Music Series are part of the 14th annual Artown Festival, July 1 – 31, 2009 and made possible by a Cultural Event Grant from the City of Reno. The month-long summer arts festival features more than 350 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations and businesses in locations citywide, with major funding provided by the City of Reno.

Free parking is available after 7 p.m. in the Brian Whalen Parking Complex, north of Church Fine Arts, and in the Sierra Street Parking Complex, one block west of North Virginia Street between 11th Street and College Drive. A patron drop-off area is adjacent to Nightingale Concert Hall on North Virginia Street near College Drive.

Master of arts degree student Katy Govan organized the community project, which features works by Hug High School’s English as a Second Language students.

The event is free to the public.

Live SkyTonight Star Talk

Where: Fleischmann Planetarium
What: Join Dan Ruby, Associate Director of the Fleischmann Planetarium for a live star talk in our domed theater. Dan will use our state of the art digital projector to illustrate what is visible in our sky this time of the year and answer any questions. Experiments in Navigation: Charles Hobson Exhibit

Where: Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, Whittemore Gallery (first floor)
What: What is a book? Could it be shaped like a globe or perhaps a fan or a box of chocolates? Experience the book as a vibrant contemporary art form by visiting the Charles Hobson Exhibit, "Experiments in Navigation," in the Whittemore Gallery of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. The exhibit will be available all hours the Knowledge Center is open (hours vary daily) from June 22 to September 16. The exhibit is part of "Book Arts: Fusing Words and Visual Imagination," an Artown Festival presentation. Admission is free.

A Bivariate Distribution Connected with Poissonian Maxima of Exponential Variables

What: In this work we present a bivariate distribution of X and N, where N has a Poisson distribution and X is the maximum of N independent, identically distributed exponential variables. The joint bivariate distribution is developed, along with some useful representations of the model. The results also include univariate marginal and conditional distributions, moments and the covariance matrix, simulation, and estimation of the parameters.

Capitol City Arts Initiative presents “Grad Night”

Wine Tasting Study

Where: Experimental Winery, Valley Road Experiment Station
What: Your partcipation in a wine tasting study is requested. The wines were made from the grapes grown at the Valley Road Experiment Station at UNR from both well-watered and drought-stressed vines. This tasting will be held every Wednesday from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at the Experimental Winery at the Valley Road Experiment Station. Each week we will taste a different varietal wine made from different years (vertical tasting). A tasting sheet and pencil will be provided. Instruction on how to evaluate your tasting will be provided. The results from your analysis will be included in the study. Signs will be posted at the gate at 910 Valley Road to direct you to the winery. A donation of $10 per person (if you bring your own glass) is requested and will be used to support students and our grape and wine research program. An additional $5 donation is requested if you desire to have one of our Nevada Wine glasses. Please RSVP to Kitty Spreeman at spreeman@unr.edu or call 775-784-4225. Five Week GRE Preparation Workshop
