Current Projects / Research Interest
Research interests center around utilizing biotechnological and genomics approaches to understand the biodiversity, biogeochemical activities, and unique adaptations of microorganisms to the environments they inhabit. A major goal of her research is development of environmental genomics technologies for studying gene expression in organisms sampled directly from the environment, thereby circumventing the need for cultivation. One currently funded project is studying gene expression in Antarctic bacterioplankton living in constantly cold waters (-2 to -1 oC). Murray is also co-Principal Investigator on two different biocomplexity awards. The first, initiated in January 2002, is centered around sequencing DNA and determining gene expression from a consortia of episymbiotic microorganisms associated with the hydrothermal vent worm known as Alvinella Pompejana. In the end, Murray and colleagues hope to define a consensus metabolic strategy that describes the microbial community in the context of the environment. The second award, initiated in September 2002, will explore how the biodiversity and activity of microbial communities are required to create terraced architectures observed in high temperature carbonate spring deposits. The work will be conducted in Yellowstone National Park and near Sienna, Italy.
