2011 - 2012 Balloon
Race Scholarship Winners
Balloon Race Scholarship Recipients Named
The University Balloon Race Scholarship Committee
has been in existence since 1986 and has awarded scholarship funds
since the early 1990s. Two thousand dollars in scholarships has
been distributed each year since 1999. The committee exists solely
to raise the money to award two scholarships a year; one to an
undergraduate student and one to a graduate student.
The committee announced in July scholarship recipients for the
2011-2012 academic year: Calen Evans as the graduate student recipient
and Heather Barker as the undergraduate student.
Calen Evans taught swim lessons, ran summer camps and worked with
youth basketball leagues. He is seeking a master’s degree
in elementary education and would like to pursue a career as an
elementary school counselor upon graduation.
Heather Barker volunteered for the Committee to Aid Abused Women,
Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Reno Police Department and Washoe
County Detention Facility. She is seeking a bachelor’s degree
in criminal justice. Upon graduation she would like to attend law
school and pursue a career as a prosecutor or police officer.
The University Balloon Race Scholarship Committee encourages everyone
to attend the Great Reno Balloon Races at Rancho San Rafael Park
on Sept. 9-11. For a $5 donation you can receive this year’s
University Balloon Race Scholarship pin, which can be obtained
at the University Balloon Race Scholarship Committee booth.
