THE 1997 ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE SURVEY

Employment

Consistent with the Employer and Alumni surveys, the AES indicated that the UNR student body is comprised primarily of working students. Approximately 90% of all respondents indicated that they worked at some time during the 1996-1997 academic year. Of this group, between 70% and 80% worked primarily off campus. Ninety percent indicated that they worked during the academic year; one-third worked during the summer while taking summer courses; and roughly one-half worked during the summer, while not enrolled in classes. While the majority of the respondents worked thirty or fewer hours per week during the academic year, forty percent of the transfer students indicated that they worked thirty-one or more hours.

Internships/Practicums/Field Experience

As indicated by reponses to employer and alumni surveys, practical experience has been found to be extremely important to the success of our graduates. Therefore, respondents were asked to indicate if they had taken advantage of the opportunities to participate in internships, practicums, or field experience. Forty percent of nontransfer students stated they had participated in at least one of these types of activities; 58% of the transfer students had participated in at least one. Field experience was most frequently cited for both nontransfer and transfer students with approximately 28% participation. Internships were the second most frequently cited (approximately 12%). For those respondents that did not participate in any of these practical experience opportunities, being unaware of the opportunity was the most frequently cited reason.
