University Percussion Ensemble Concert featuring John Riley

The University Percussion Ensemble will be joined by guest drum set artist, John Riley, and The Northern Nevada All-Star Percussion Ensemble, comprised of select area high school percussion students. Riley began playing at age 8, started his professional career at 14, and has studied, played and taught music ever since. He has degrees from the University of North Texas and the Manhattan School of Music and is on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, SUNY Purchase. Riley is also an artist-in-residence at Amsterdam Conservatory in Holland and a published author on several books about jazz drumming.

From Poetry to Song: Goethe to Schubert

Goethe scholar Horst Lange collaborates with soprano Katharine DeBoer and pianist James Winn to explore the poetry of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Listen for the transformation of the written word into song by Goethe’s contemporaries such as Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Reichardt and Zelter.
Nevada Winds Woodwind Quintet

The Nevada Winds woodwind quintet will be performing selections from the standard woodwind quintet repertoire. Members of this scholarship quintet advanced through a screened audition process to participate in this elite ensemble. In addition to semester recitals, the Nevada Winds are involved in university and community-outreach programs.
University Wind Ensemble presents
Wind Dances

The final Wind Ensemble concert of the season will feature music associated with dance movements including “Vientos y Tangos.” The composition was one of four commissions by a consortium of university, service and community bands (including the Metropolitan Wind Symphony) to celebrate the 70th birthday and retirement of Frank Battisti at New England Conservatory.
University Orchestra Spring Concert

Spring Dance Concert featuring Lili Cai Chinese Dance Company

The 2009 spring dance concert will feature guest performing artists Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company and the choreography of Kristen Avansino, Jon Lehrer and University dance faculty members Cari Cunningham and Barbara Land. Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company melds ancient Chinese forms with modern dance in an artistic and inventive marriage of styles. The company bridges the continuum from past to contemporary — from spectacular court dances of Chinese dynasties to contemporary works fusing classical Chinese movement and ballet, complemented by dazzling costumes, original music and multimedia designs.
