Jan. 19-28, Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Jan. 28, Closing Lecture, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and Reception, 6:30-8 p.m.

Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery, Church Fine Arts Building

Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books features handmade books created for this travelling exhibition which will be displayed in 46 national and international venues. Artworks of monumental physical scale are overwhelming. The diminutive viewer is confronted and consumed by the gigantic. Presented with the miniature, the viewer, no longer assigned to the passive role, could instead devour the work, taking it into his or her soul. The miniature invites the viewer into a personal and intimate relationship. With attention drawn to the significance of the seemingly insignificant, the momentousness of the miniscule is magnified thus instilling monumental value. Visit mimb.org for more information on his exhibition and its creation and travels.

Peter Whittenberger is currently working towards his Master of Fine Arts degree and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in printmaking from the University of Montana. His relational art and videos investigate ideas of what is common to us, exploring experiences we share in our day-to-day lives. His thesis exhibition theme concerns isolating ordinary activities and taking responsibility for them. By elevating the common to a level of importance, it is possible to accentuate similarities in our society. The intent of the work is to use these similarities to present ideas of unity and understanding in our community.

Opening Reception: Oct 7, lecture 5:30-6:30pm, opening 6:30-8pm

This exhibition features three artists from Seattle who concentrate on sculpture and are based in historical and narrative elements: Debra Baxter, Dawn Cerny and Jenny Heishman. The structure will be an untraditional three-person arrangement as the artists were invited to create a unique exhibition based both on their own works and in collaboration with each other as they saw fit. The title, which is the only required element directed by Sheppard Gallery, is based on a song written by Bob Dylan as sung by Nina Simone; how the artist's interpret the theme will be part of the excitement of the show's development.

Catalog available designed by Gretchen Bennett.
