Jason Huff
February 27- April 7, 2006
Lecture: Thursday March 2, 2006
Reception: to follow 6:30-8:30 pm

Jason Huff finds it amusing how we give value to objects and decide what is worth collecting. Huff states, " It's kind of silly how we have Fine China that we only use for those 'Special occasions"' that never seem to happen". Huff feels this desire to collect things drives us and forces us to give them special places in our homes. Through Huff's art, he pokes fun at our collecting habits by looking at what we collect, and how we use or don't use them. The "American Kings" series references mid-20th century novelty ceramics and combines it with contemporary collectible objects. Instead of porcelain replicas of Lady Di, he wanted to honor American royalty. We have many "Kings", so he wanted to be proud like any American and salute as many pop-icons who have the last name "King" or are somehow given that moniker.   Huff will be exhibiting works from his "American Kings" series in the Sheppard Gallery.

Lecture: Thursday July 13, 5:30-8:30pm Reception to follow 6:30-8:30pm

This exhibition is a collaboration between twelve artists, both regional and international. The exhibition will bring the work of contemporary urban street artists into a gallery setting. Commonly referred to as Neo-Folk or Mission School, this energetic style of artwork has been undergoing a rich metamorphosis for the past 25 years, breaking free from its early associations with disobedient graffiti into an aesthetic genre and style all its own. Each of these artists will be coming to the project with his/her exceptional and unique background of influences, history, disciplines, and formal practices creating a diverse and exciting cultural experience. The artists are: Anthony Alston, Robert Brown, Erik Burke, Caedron Burchfield, John Yoyogi Fortes, Heather Fuss, Ahren Hertel, Nick Larsen, Brian Porray, Laura Powell, Jonathan Purtill, and Tim Smith. These artists will create a plywood maze inside of the gallery that will feature murals, video projection, sculptural elements, performance, as well as live music and sound installation. Guest curator Brian Porray has selected each artist based upon their link to the overall aesthetic, therefore each of the participants will be free to express their own unique style. The plywood construction will enable the exhibit to travel throughout the region periodically, giving it a life outside of the gallery and therefore exposing it to the widest possible audience.

To Collect and Preserve
August 21- September 22, 2006
Lecture: Thursday September 7th, 5:30-6:30 pm Room 153, 1st Floor, Church Fine Arts Building
Reception to follow 6:30-8:30pm

This group exhibition brings together artworks from the collections of eight Reno art collectors. The collectors share a common, passionate thread towards supporting local and regional Nevada artists, as well as national and international artists, through the purchase and preservation of their work. The intention of the exhibition project is several-fold. It is important to recognize and honor those who seek to enrich their lives by surrounding themselves with original works of art while at the same time providing much needed support to artists. Our intention is to use this exhibition as an opportunity to educate our audience in regard to the process and significance of collecting fine art. Towards this, we will be presenting a panel discussion of the featured collectors. Local collectors loaning artworks from their collections include: Margo Piscevich, Frank Hill, Randy and Amy Collins, Dr. James R. Herz, Peter & Nancy Pool, John & Dana Richardson, Nello Gonfantini, and Hannah & Bruce Porter.
