Sheppard Contemporary and University Galleries exist to help viewers explore today's world through the intellectual and creative inquiry of art practice. Dedicated to art encounters informed by interdisciplinary perspectives, University Galleries offer regularly scheduled programming and events co-hosted with other campus departments and local organizations. Exhibitions rotate frequently. On most Thursday nights visitors will find an opportunity for a new art encounter in our galleries. Lectures, workshops, demonstrations, screenings, studio visits, receptions, and more are all part of University Galleries programming accompanying each exhibition. Our exhibitions and associated programming affirm the goals behind our mission, which include the enrichment of people’s lives, the celebration of human and cultural diversity, and the development of critical thinking and complex aesthetic awareness, that nourish fuller participation in the human community.
Sheppard Contemporary, the premier art gallery at University of Nevada, Reno, is located in Church Fine Arts Complex. New exhibitions of contemporary art are offered every six weeks. Student Galleries South are dedicated to student exhibitions including BFA, MFA, and student curated exhibitions. Located in Jot Travis Building, these galleries host new exhibitions every two weeks. The Front Door Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of the Department of Art’s growing permanent collection of art. Located in the newly renovated entrance to Church Fine Arts Complex, this gallery is often visitors’ first entry point to the University’s home for visual art, dance, theatre, and music programs. University Galleries’ newest gallery is located in downtown Reno’s West Street Market; Artspace involves visitors in the process of art-making through collaborative, community-based exhibitions. Artists are in regular day residence at Artspace and viewers are encouraged to stop by for a visit. Adjacent to Sheppard Contemporary, McNamara Gallery is an experimental exhibition space devoted to fostering the growth of students’ art practices. Investment Gallery is an ambassador space for University Galleries located in Fitzgerald Student Services Building. Home to rotating, long-term exhibitions, Investment Gallery extends our mission by reaching diverse viewers from across campus.
