"And the crowds came. They'd follow a looping biplane
out into the farmlands and find a man or woman selling tickets for a ride
in an airplane - maybe as little as $1 for a five-minute trip around the
field, $2.50 for a chance to fly all around town."
d3ms collaborative presented it's latest venture, "Barnstorming
at the Big Star Ranch" which took place on Saturday, August 3rd,
2002, at Sally and Dave's "Big Star Ranch", Grass Vallery, California.
This site-specific art project featured large "flying" objects
filling the barns interior, paper airplanes, projections in the
form of light, shadow and video creating a barnstorming palace of the
rural kind. The event involved the temporary transformation of a red barn
into a space for kinetic contemplation of heat, light, air, hay, chickens
and evidence of the desire to flyt. The objects in the space were almost
entirely made from materials found onsite - wood, corrogated aluminum,
fans, etc.. The video and film projections featured real time images of
floating paper airplanes, recorded images of sky/clouds, rotating fans,
cathedral interiors and a hand in flight out of the window of a car on
the freeway.
The project was on view for one evening then dismantled
the following morning with specific visual eliments left in place at the
request of the owners. Our intent, like the barnstormers of an earlier
era, was to arrive, create spectacle, then depart.
A very special thanks to Sally and Dave for their kindness
and hospitality.
