19th-Century Ranching in Hawaii

CW photographing LaumaiaSince 2007, Carolyn White has been directing a project jointly with Peter Mills (University of Hawaii, Hilo) that examines 19th-century ranching on Hawaii's Big Island. We have been looking at a series of ranching stations on the slopes of Mauna Kea,  focusing on the use of material culture, domestic space, and landscape in the development of paniolo ranching culture of Hawai`i. Ph.D. student Benjamin Barna is researching paniolo identity in pursuit of his Ph.D. at UNR.
