University Administrative Manual

2,258: Reference Checks

Last Revised: August 2005

Reference checks on prospective classified employees are strongly encouraged. Applicants are most likely to provide the name of a reference that will be favorable to them. If possible, try to obtain references from persons in addition to the primary contact name provided by the applicant.

Appointing authorities may review the service jacket of any current classified employee being considered for hire. All information received on background checks will be considered confidential and is to be treated as such by appointing authorities.

BCN Human Resources also encourages conducting a background check on the final candidate. BCN Human Resources can provide this service to hiring departments at a small charge. The background check will provide information on any criminal history.

Certain jobs that have an impact on public health or safety are subject to drug and alcohol testing. BCN Human Resources identifies those specific positions and coordinates the testing of applicants.
