Applying to Graduate School
While earning a Bachelor“s degree in psychology can provide you with a number of career opportunities, many of the most interesting careers in psychology require you to attend graduate school and earn an advanced degree (such as a Master“s degree, a Ph.D., a Psy.D., or an Ed.D.).
Getting through the graduate school application process can be complex and grueling. Some applications include clear and explicit instructions; others seem like an aptitude test in analytical reasoning. However, you are not alone! The psychology department advisor is available to help you with the application process, and faculty members are always happy to answer any questions you might have. Further, this web page contains information and links to numerous resources on the internet which can help you decide which graduate school to apply to, how to make yourself a competitive candidate, and how to get through the entire process in one piece!

Applying to Graduate School Timetable
| Junior Year - Spring Semester |
- think about the types of programs you're interested in
- start talking to the faculty
- if you haven't already done so, get involved in research and/or fieldwork in the department

| Summer before Senior Year |
- review the graduate programs available in the area of psychology you wish to pursue
- make a rough list of schools you might apply to
- start writing your personal statement
- begin studying for the GREs

| Senior Year - Fall Semester |
- near the start of the semester, write to schools for information about their programs
- as you receive this information, start making your final list of schools you will apply to
- continue studying for the GREs
- take the GREs when you feel well-prepared, but take them as early as you can in case you want to retake them
- toward the middle and end of the semester, start asking faculty members to write letters of recommendation

- complete your applications and send them off
- deadlines may be in January, February, or March, depending on the school
- if possible, visit the schools
- hope, wish, and pray for acceptances!
