Program Description

The UNR CanSat program involves students in hands-on projects to design, construct, operate, and evaluate soda-can-sized payload packages (CanSats) that are launched (via a rocket) to approximately 2 miles in altitude from where they are deployed. The CanSat returns to Earth via a parachute, typically landing within 5 miles of the launch site. Students work as a team to create a system that will return the payload to the launch site either through teleoperation or autonomously (i.e., autonomous robotic vehicle).

ARLISS 2006

Participation in the 2006 ARLISS Event focused primarilly on the development of an autonomous vehicle to retrieve the CanSat after it was launched and deployed. ARLISS 2005

 

ARLISS 2003

Four members of the UNR team with Ed Hackett (Desert Research Institute) who built and launched the rocket carrying our payload at the ARLISS event in September of 2003. In the second of our two ARLISS 2003 flights, the payload landed ~1.3 miles from the launch site under relatively calm wind conditions.
